Thompson Tee Review: Do the Hydro-Shield Sweat Pads Work?

Thompson Tee is probably the first name you run into when you search for a sweat-proof undershirt, so it’s fair to ask whether it deserves the attention. I looked at what the brand says, what independent reviewers have written, and what you actually get for the money. Here is the full picture, including the parts that are still unproven.

Quick verdict: a solid, plain cotton undershirt with a built-in underarm barrier pad. It is aimed at one problem, underarm sweat showing through your shirt, and it handles that well according to the reviewers who have worn it. It will not cool you down, the pads feel bulky at first, and it does nothing for back, chest or groin sweat.

What Thompson Tee sells

Thompson Tee makes undershirts for men and women with its Hydro-Shield underarm pads sewn in. The men’s range comes in crewneck and V-neck, in original and slim fits. The women’s range is a scoop neck. Everything is 100% combed cotton according to the brand’s technology page.

How the Hydro-Shield pad is supposed to work

According to Thompson Tee, the underarm area is built from two parts working together: a looped-knit fabric that soaks up sweat, and an ultra-thin medical-grade film behind it that stops moisture from leaking through to your outer shirt. The brand also says the layering and stitching pull sweat away from the skin so it can escape as vapor, and that the technology was granted a US patent in 2014.

Those are the brand’s own descriptions. I could not find independent lab testing of the pads, so treat “100% sweat-proof” as a marketing claim backed by a guarantee, not a verified result. It is the same general idea as the barrier shirts I covered in the best sweat-proof undershirts for men list: absorb first, block second.

What independent reviewers say

Independent coverage is thin, which is worth knowing before you spend $35. The most useful outside source I found is a Business Insider review. The reviewer found the pads worked on hot days, but said they feel heavy at first and a bit like wearing padding under your arms, and that the shirt is built to soak up sweat rather than keep you cool. They also noted you can still feel the dampness where the fabric touches skin, and that it costs more than an ordinary undershirt.

Most of the other reviews online are posted on Thompson Tee’s own blog or by affiliated writers, so I wouldn’t lean on those for a balanced view.

Pros and cons

What works

  • A real barrier layer under the arms, not just thicker cotton
  • Plain cotton fabric that washes like any undershirt
  • Several fits and necklines, so it can sit under crewneck or V-neck shirts
  • A brand guarantee on the barrier, which most cheaper options don’t offer

What doesn’t

  • The pads are noticeable, and may feel bulky until you get used to them
  • It absorbs sweat; it doesn’t keep you cool, and a saturated pad stays damp against your skin
  • It only protects the underarms, so back, chest and groin sweat still go through
  • Priced above basic undershirts, and independent proof is limited

Who it suits, and who should skip it

It suits you if underarm stains on work shirts are your main problem and you want a straightforward cotton undershirt that does one job. If your sweating is mostly on your back or torso, a wicking or vented layer will do more; I explain the difference in moisture-wicking vs moisture-absorbing fabrics. If you hate anything bulky under your arms, a hidden-pad shirt like Social Citizen may be more comfortable, and if you want built-in odor control look at Ejis.

Thompson Tee vs the alternatives

  • Social Citizen: pads hidden inside a shirt you can wear on its own, so no undershirt layer.
  • Ejis: similar pad idea with silver anti-odor treatment, plus boxer briefs.
  • SUTRAN: a layered fabric approach rather than a separate pad; heavier and pricier.
  • Cheaper option: sew-in or stick-in underarm shields, covered in my hyperhidrosis clothing brands roundup.

My take on Thompson Tee

Thompson Tee does what it is built to do: it hides underarm sweat. If you are a heavy sweater, it is one of the two brands I would point you to first, along with SUTRAN, because they keep sweat hidden for longer than most. The trade-off is the bulk of the pad, so give yourself a few days to get used to it.

Quick answers about Thompson Tee

Does Thompson Tee really stop sweat stains?
The brand guarantees that sweat won’t get through the underarm barrier, and the reviewer I found who wore it on hot days agreed the pads work. I could not find independent lab tests, so the strongest evidence is the guarantee and user reports.

Can I wear a Thompson Tee for hyperhidrosis?
Yes, it is designed for people who sweat through their shirts. It protects the underarm area only, so it is one tool, not a treatment. For treatments, see what actually works for excessive sweating.

Is a Thompson Tee machine washable?
Yes. The brand says you can wash and dry it like a normal undershirt. It also advises against sleeping in it, to make the pads last longer.

Does it work for women?
There is a women’s scoop neck with the same Hydro-Shield pads. Women with chest or under-bust sweat may need extra layers; see my sweat-proof undergarments for women.

Jessica Bellinger

I started this blog to help people adapt their fashion styles to their sweating. I've had hands and feet hyperhidrosis for 15+ years (a health disorder due to sweat glands hyperfunctioning), and after a successful surgery to fix it, I now deal with the normal compensatory sweating side effect of the surgery. Since the sweating areas changed, I had to adapt my style, outfits, and shopping habits to my sweating both before and after the surgery. Everything I write is based on first-hand experience, which I hope will help others feel their most confident in their outfits.
