Using layers to hide sweat (4 types)

Using layers to hide sweat (4 types)

The best part about winter is that even though you’ll still sweat, at least you’ll have fashion tricks to hide it! Wearing several layers on top of each other helps with keeping you warm, hiding any potential unsightly wet stains, and adding style to an outfit!

I’m not gonna discuss about layers in terms of insulation, protection from the rain, etc. We’re not chatting about going to the ski resort here. But I’ll refer to layers from a comfy, sweat-hiding standpoint of course!

THE 4 TYPES of LAYERS:

  1. The base layer: a cotton, lightweight shirt or t-shirt
  2. The middle layer: it can show the base layer or not, and can be a cardigan, a sweater, or a hoodie
  3. The outer layer: a denim or leather jacket, a trench or coat
  4. The accessories: adding a necklace, scarf, etc. on the other layers
An example on how I layer in the winter: base layer is a white cotton shirt, middle layer is a black sweater, outer layer is a black coat. I add a scarf and a necklace to bring some more style to the outfit.

HOW TO LAYER:

  1. During fall or spring, you can continue layering, except you’ll only need 2 of the layers, the ones you want. The base and middle ones, or the base and outer ones for example.
  2. That’s a lot of layers/colors to match with the color of your pants, shoes, bag, etc. so when you are not sure whether they’re all gonna match or not, I’d say keep it to 2-3 colors across the outfit maximum. Or even keep the layers in the same shade of color, that way you know you won’t be looking like a rainbow.
  3. Pick a base shirt or t-shirt that is fitted if you put a sweater on top, otherwise you’ll look bigger (I’ve had people ask me once whether I put on some weight because the shirt I was wearing underneath my sweater was not fitted L ).
  4. Play with fabrics. It’s better to have different textures to add character to your outfit and to avoid looking dull and bigger. You can wear a cotton t-shirt with jeans or leather jacket for example.
  5. Don’t be afraid to add accessories: scarves, jewelry, hats, etc.
  6. If you get too warm, you can simply take off the outer or middle layers!
  7. If your base shirt or t-shirt becomes so soaked that it’s uncomfortable (and if you are wearing a sweater on top of it), then you can sneak in the bathroom, take it off, and wear your middle layer sweater alone (Yep, I’ve done it before, no shame: p )
Simple Layering: a white shirt and a black sweater

Layering is an easy way to change your look by using different combinations of the same basic pieces. It also works for all seasons year round!

Jessica Bellinger

I started this blog to help people adapt their fashion styles to their sweating. She has had hands and feet hyperhidrosis for 15+ years (a health disorder due to sweat glands hyperfunctioning) and after a successful surgery to fix it, now deals with the normal compensatory sweating side effect of the surgery. Since the sweating areas changed, she had to adapt her style, outfits and shopping habits to her sweating both before and after the surgery. Everything i write is based on first-hand experience, which she hopes will help others be their most confident in their outfits.
